Front Side Windows
All vehicles must allow at least 20% VLT on the front two side windows. This is the rule that gets people pulled over most often — don't go darker than 20% up front.
New Mexico tint laws vary by vehicle type. We install every job to be street-legal and NM-compliant — here's exactly what's allowed.
| Window | Legal VLT | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Windshield | Non-reflective tint top 5" | Above AS-1 line only |
| Front Side Windows | 20% VLT or more | Must allow 20%+ light in |
| Rear Side Windows | Any VLT | No restriction |
| Rear Window | Any VLT | No restriction |

For trucks, vans, and SUVs there's no VLT restriction on rear side or rear windows. You can go as dark as you want — 5%, limo tint, any level. Passenger cars also have no restriction on rear windows.
New Mexico allows darker front window tint with a valid medical exemption. If you have a condition requiring reduced UV or light exposure, you may qualify for a waiver. Check with your doctor and the NM MVD.
A non-reflective visor strip is allowed on the top portion of the windshield above the AS-1 line — typically the top 5 inches. Full windshield tint is not legal in NM.
New Mexico does not permit metallic or mirrored tint on any window. Your tint must not be more reflective than standard window glass.
We know these laws and apply them to every job. If you're not sure what's legal for your vehicle, just ask — we'll walk you through your options before we start.
